"It's big," Hynds said. "But I bet that Bible is on that real thin paper."
He's right, but that doesn't take away from his near decadelong project to chronicle the 180-year history of his home church. The retired University of Georgia journalism professor wanted to make sure he got every detail right.
And there are plenty of details in "Always Becoming New: A History of First Baptist Church."
"I tried to tell the story of the church, but I also included a lot of records," he said. "Somebody can read through the 519 pages pretty quickly, but if they want the details, they're all there."
Hynds took an interest in church history when he was working on his dissertation about Athens during the Antebellum era. He decided then that, by the time he retired, he'd make the book his duty.
He retired in 1999 and jumped into project shortly thereafter. Now, the 80-year-old has his finished product.
